The Indian word Tequixquiatlapan means "River of the tequesquite waters". After its foundation, this town was called Santa María de la Asunción y de las Aguas calientes (St. Mary of Assumption and Hot Waters): But the original word remained and today it is called Tequisquiapan, easier to pronounce.

Tequisquiapan was founded on July 24, 1551, and acquired the rank of Municipality in 1939. It has an altitude of 18880 meters above sea level and warm climate. The town has its viceregal image, with narrow streets ending at small squares, sunbathed almost all year.
